Expressing Science as Art


Jiang Li's digital artworks are inspired by the beautiful and diverse variety of structures of genes and proteins. By collaborating with biologists and computational scientists, she has created many digital artworks to exhibit the beauty of genes and proteins, convey the wonders and mystery of genetics, and to express our feelings towards nature, civilization and diseases.

She graduated from SiChuan Fine Arts Institute in 2003. After her graduation, she has become increasingly interested in using fine arts to express the beauty of the world of Science that we cannot see directly. Since 2004, she has undertaken the challenge to become a research assistant in the Digital Art and Science Program at the Department of Computational Science, National University of Singapore with the task of establishing and leading a new digital art and science program.

Currently she aims at the production of high quality artworks which attempt to go beyond the beautiful conventional image of genes and proteins often produced by scientists. Inspired by the research of scientists, she has applied deliberate graphic manipulations and digital sounds intended to blur the line between science and art, and attract interest from both communities and from the general public.

Her artworks are given a multimedia flavor by adding the music created from the genetic sequence to express the "genetic message" along with the image of genes and proteins.

Her work has been influenced and inspired by artists such as Eduardo Kac, Ruth G. West, Corinne Whitaker, Sol LeWitt, Eric J. Heller, Kennith Edward, Mara G. Haseltine, Hunter O'Reilly and Dov Lederberg. She has learned about latest developments and benefited from the programs and services provided by the art and science organizations such as Art & Science Collaborations Inc who has been playing a key role in nurturing and coalescing the art and science field.

She is indebted to the contribution of other coworkers involved in the Digital Art and Science Program: Han Lian Yi, Zheng ChanJuan, Cui Juan, Zhang Hailei, Zhou Hao and Lin Honghuang. She would like to thank Professor Chen Yu Zong for his support, encouragement, and suggestions to her work.
